Symptoms and Signs of Bruxism

Control bruxism typically exerts remarkably powerful forces on enamel, gums, and joints. One estimate places it at 3 times the forces generated throughout chewing (Castaneda, 1992, p. 46), while another puts it at ten instances-powerful enough to crack a walnut.

Why are these forces so high? First, the bruxing exercise is not underneath control of the acutely aware, rational, mind, which could have moderated or prevented the act from occurring. Second, when one eats, the chewing force is utilized in part to the meals, to not the enamel; however when one bruxes, all the power is applied directly to the teeth.
